Engineering and architecture students in Iloilo were acquainted on the importance of standardization in upholding consumers’ rights to safety and quality of products sold in the market.

 

Department of Trade and Industry Region 6 (DTI-6) Trade Development Division Chief Felisa Judith Degala said that products covered by the mandatory standards shall be used later by these students in their profession.

 

“Their appreciation and understanding on compliance to Philippine standards must start while they are still in school,” Degala said. She added that these mandatory products ensures and involves quality and safety of certain products in the market.

 

DTI-Iloilo Standards Officer Grace M. Benedicto discussed the mandatory product certification under the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS), putting emphasis on the Philippine Standards (PS) Mark and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC). DTI-Iloilo Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist Demar L. Solinap, on the other hand, presented the importance and coverage of licensing and registration to the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB).

 

The activity was in line with the continued information and education campaign to provide information to students on the standards, technical specifications, and usage of the different types of products in the construction industry.

 

October, which was declared as Consumer Welfare Month, gives national attention on the role that consumers play in the vitality of the country’s economy and to instill awareness, vigilance and protection of the consumers. Further, this month also commemorates the celebration of the National Standards Week, which is held every second week of October each year by virtue of Proclamation No. 1327, series of 1974.

 

The activity entitled, “Forum on Standardization for Engineering and Architecture Students,” was participated by students from the University of Iloilo-Phinma, University of San Agustin, and Central Philippine University.
