MATI CITY, DAVAO ORIENTAL – With its commitment to serve more micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here has brought its services to several far-flung barangays in the province.

One of DTI’s breakthrough goals for MSME development is the conduct of Negosyo Serbisyo sa Barangay (NSB) caravan in the underserved barangays in the 4th, 5th, or 6th class municipalities, or in the geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAS) in Davao Oriental. These NSB caravans are designed to capacitate those in the hinterlands by bringing to the target beneficiaries the agency’s package of business development assistance. As such, seminars and training activities are given to them to improve their business operation or start a new livelihood to help their respective families further.

As of March 2021, four NSB Caravans have already been conducted in the province, bringing the department’s business development services closer to the people through partnerships with the barangay local government units (LGUs). These included various seminars and training, such as the following:

  1. Entrepreneurial Mind-Setting Seminar cum Negosyo Center Services Orientation
  2. Retail Business Management and Financial Literacy Seminars
  3. Abaca Production Technology Seminar
  4. Training on Fried Empanada, Taro Chips, and Banana Chips Making
  5. Training on Coco Sugar and Coco Oil Processing
  6. Training on Ube Puto-Cheese Making
  7. Training on Ampalaya Pickles Processing
  8. Training on Meat Processing

These have benefitted 120 MSMEs, wherein 50 were from Barangay Mahayag in Banaybanay; 20 from Barangay Carmen in Boston; another 20 from Barangay DMM in Lupon; and 30 from Barangay San Jose, also in Boston.

DTI-Davao Oriental OIC-Provincial Director Sylvia D. Ordiz shared that their office is targeting to hold a total of 22 NSBs this year.

“With that figure, we can help more MSMEs, and these are not only the existing ones. We also want to help those who are just starting up or still planning to have their own business. With our Negosyo Centers, which is situated in all of our 11 city/municipalities throughout the province, we can provide them with proper guidance and advice,” she noted. ♦
