Manila City, Philippines—In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s goal to transform the Philippines into a premier logistics hub in Asia, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has intensified its efforts to reduce transport and logistics costs, and ensure an efficient supply chain.

During the SCMAP Supply Chain Conference 2024, Undersecretary Jean Pacheco outlined a comprehensive strategy to streamline logistics processes. This includes the continued implementation of the Executive Order on pass-through fees, a bill to lower international shipping charges, and the push for the adoption of the e-airway bill.

The DTI undersecretary also announced the development of a private sector-led National Logistics Strategy and a National Logistics Investments Plan. Both are aimed to attract more investments in logistics infrastructure, thereby improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the country’s supply chain.

Additionally, the DTI disclosed efforts to collaborate with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in the creation of Logistics Industry TVET Board. This is through the Logistics Services Philippines (LSPH), an informal aggrupation of associations in the logistics services sector initiated by the DTI. Support for the Clark International Airport Corporation’s plan to establish the Clark National Food Hub was also shared but the Department, an initiative that is set to revolutionize the country’s food distribution system.

Undersecretary Pacheco lauded the private sector associations like the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP), acknowledging their vital role in navigating the complexities of the supply chain. She then revealed plans for a tripartite partnership with SCMAP and the Philippine Retailers Association to develop a comprehensive job blueprint for the wholesale and retail trade sector, contributing to the country’s employment and economic growth.

Meanwhile, the DTI advances direct connections between farmers and institutional buyers, as championed by the Three-Year Food Logistics Action Agenda. The innovative end-to-end supply chain platform developed by InsightSCS through USAID’s Strengthening Private Enterprise for the Digital Economy (SPEED), serves as a testament to this.

“These comprehensive measures are designed to optimize our supply chain, reduce costs, and enhance the competitiveness of Philippine products globally,” Undersecretary Pacheco affirmed. “The DTI is unwavering in its support of the President’s vision to transform the Philippines into a premier logistics hub in Asia.”

Moreover, DTI Acting Secretary Cristina A. Roque expressed her support for these initiatives, stressing how streamlining logistics infrastructure and fostering strategic partnerships are pivotal in driving overall economic growth and improving supply chain efficiency. ♦
