ILIGAN CITY, ISABELA — The Department of Trade and Industry Region 2 (DTI R2), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology Region 2 (DOST R2) and the Municipal Treasurers Association of the Philippines (MUNTAP)-Isabela Chapter, successfully concluded the 2nd run of the Training on Calibration of Weighing Scales and Test Weights at the Ilagan City Hotel, City of Ilagan, Isabela, on 14-15 June 2023.
The calibration training is devoted to upholding consumer protection by ensuring the accuracy of weights and measures used in consumer transactions. In this light, municipal treasurers and other concerned personnel were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to calibrate weighing scales and test weights accurately.
The first day of the training commenced with an appreciation message delivered by Mr. Laurence Balmaceda, the Treasurer of the City of Ilagan. In his address, Mr. Balmaceda emphasized that vital knowledge and skills may be gained by the participants in the training; hence, he encouraged the participants to actively engage in fruitful discussions to maximize learning. Mr. Balmaceda also expressed gratitude to the organizers for selecting the City of Ilagan as the venue and wished for a productive and enlightening experience for all attendees.
Ms. Maria Theresa Araneta-Flores, CPA, Isabela Provincial Treasurer, likewise delivered an appreciation message, expressing gratitude for the collaboration and the opportunity to strengthen knowledge and skills in calibration.
ARD Winston T. Singun, delivering the opening message on behalf of RD Leah Pulido Ocampo highlighted the significant importance of the training. He emphasized the crucial role accurate measurement plays in ensuring fair trade and protecting consumers from fraudulent practices. The proper calibration of weighing scales guarantees that consumers receive the right amount of goods for their money.
Mr. Richard Paguirigan, President of MUNTAP Isabela Chapter, provided an overview of the activity, shedding light on the key objectives and desired outcomes of the program.
Engr. Rogelio Bulusan Jr., the DOST R2 Resource Person, led the training by covering the topics on the introduction to Metrology and the legal framework, calibration of weighing instruments and platform balances, and the inspection of fuel dispensing pumps. His expertise and guidance provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the calibration process.
Engr. Bulusan also conducted a demonstration for the LGU participants, showcasing the practical aspects of weighing scale calibration. This hands-on approach allowed attendees to gain valuable experience with the calibration procedures.
On the second day, the focus shifted to the actual calibration and inspection of fuel pumps and the calibration of truck scales that were placed at a nearby site. This practical exercise provided participants with a real-world application of the knowledge and skills they acquired during the training.
DTI R2 Isabela PD Ma. Sofia Narag concluded the event with a closing message. She expressed her appreciation for the active participation and engagement of the attendees throughout the training.
Director Narag reiterated the importance of accurate measurements in promoting fair trade and protecting consumers, encouraging the participants to apply their newly acquired skills in their respective local government units.
The organizers strongly reaffirmed their commitment to continually provide capacity-building initiatives to local government units and other stakeholders through collaborative efforts such as this successful training program.
