TUGUEGARAO CITY — In the fast-changing climate and other global emergencies, a new design and development paradigm is required. That is why the DTI Region 2 and DTI R2-Cagayan, in collaboration with the Regenesis Project, Inc., and Earthsaver Agrotech Forestry Development, conducted the Workshop on Integrated Regenerative Bamboo Master Planning on 23-25 March 2023 at the DTI R2 Negosyo Center Building, Carig Sur, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

This workshop, a pilot activity in the country, aimed to introduce and explain the need and benefit of having a comprehensive regenerative bamboo master plan that shall act as a framework to guide all subsequent activities of the participating municipalities in a coherent manner to achieve common goals and outcomes.

DTI Region 2 RD Leah Pulido Ocampo emphasized that this activity is just a jumpstart in implementing this long-term program for the bamboo industry in the region. RD Ocampo is optimistic that through this activity, a credible master plan for the pilot municipalities of the province of Cagayan will be produced, which will serve as their anchor in implementing their development efforts for the bamboo industry.

Singapore-based architects, Ar. Alakesh Dutta and Ar. Marianne Amores-Dutta of the Regenesis Project, was the resource speaker during said program.

“We can do more things for the future generation,” expressed DTI R2-Cagayan PD Henry O. Conel Jr. in his closing message as he underscored the importance of integrated bamboo regeneration in the development of the bamboo industry in the province. PD Conel reiterated that the program will be replicated in other municipalities considering the success and output of the participants, and he inspired them to continue their interest in and support of the said industry.

Moreover, strategies to develop a regenerative and resilient bamboo industry across the whole value chain were discussed, and the workshop started with the envisioning and setting of goals and aspirations; opportunities and resource mapping; identification of potential industry/plantation/forestry clusters; and mapping other potential industry or system zones, landmarks, spines, and networks for master planning.

Furthermore, site visits at nurseries, bamboo plantations, proposed eco-parks, and tourism sites in the five participating municipalities – Amulung, Baggao, Peñablanca, Iguig, and Tuguegarao City, were also conducted.

The output of the activity includes a consolidated workshop output report for the said municipalities, which comprises the regenerative design and master planning strategies complete with case studies and examples, as well as a regenerative master plan prelude. *
