LUMBAN, LAGUNA — The Department of Trade and Industry – Laguna Provincial Office (DTI-Laguna) through its Negosyo Center Lumban conducted a Small and Medium Enterprise Roving Academy (SMERA) on Fundamentals of 5S.

SMERA is a continuous learning program of DTI for the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to become competitive in the domestic and international markets.

The said event was held via Zoom Video Conference last 14th of August 2023. The Cooperative Union of Laguna’s CEO and Training Head, Ms. Ligaya M. Tan attended the event and encouraged the Cooperative Union of Laguna’s members to adopt and successfully implement the 5S System in order to experience significant increases in productivity and competitiveness.

The event was hosted by Negosyo Center Lumban as part of the Center’s regular conduct of various seminars and training sessions for the benefit of Laguna’s current and future MSMEs in collaboration with the Cooperative Union of Laguna. The MSMEs in attendance noted that, due to defective process chains, excessive inventory stacking, and redundant shop floor operations, their workplace regularly displays inefficiencies. Broad information dissemination on boosting productivity and cutting waste is also needed to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs.

The 5S System provides various advantages to MSMEs by increasing productivity and competitiveness. MSMEs can develop leaner, more organized work environments by adopting the principles of Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. This results in enhanced efficiency, quality, customer satisfaction, and cost savings. Adopting the 5S system is a critical step for MSMEs to remain competitive in today’s volatile business world.

The event concluded with an open forum in which participants were able to clarify some points and share their insights. ♦
