NEW DELHI — Amid a global slowdown, India remains the fastest-growing major economy with fourth-quarter gross domestic product growth accelerating to 7.9%, official data showed on Tuesday, handing Prime Minister Narendra Modi another reason to celebrate, following some key legislative victories.

For the financial year ending March 31, India’s economy grew 7.6%, against a rise of 7.2% in the previous fiscal year. With the strong fourth-quarter performance, India continues to outshine neighboring China, whose GDP growth stood at a seven-year low of 6.7% in the January-March period.
