Iloilo, Philippines—The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Iloilo’s annual “Artesanias de Iloilo” trade fair opened its doors at Robinsons Place Iloilo on 23 September 2024. This year’s event saw the largest participation in its five-year run, with over 125 exhibitors participating in the week-long celebration of local craftsmanship and entrepreneurship.

The fair provided a vibrant platform for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to display their diverse range of locally crafted products, from artisanal goods to food specialties. DTI Iloilo Director Ma. Dinda Tamayo shared her excitement over the fair’s record-breaking start, highlighting the event’s growing impact on promoting local entrepreneurship and boosting the province’s creative industry.

“This year, we aim for Artesanias to be unique. Artesanias is a reliable venue, a springboard that has taught us to appreciate the journeys of our MSMEs. It lets us share in their achievements, both hits and misses, and to remain connected to them. To all of you here as spectators, we would like to convert you as buyers. Buyers who support us because you believe in your role as an Ilonggo and appreciate the craftsmanship of your fellow Ilonggos,” said Regional Director Tamayo.

Symbolizing abundance and prosperity, the fair commenced with a unique opening ceremony called “sandok-bubo,” a water-led ritual. This symbolic act underscored the collective hope for a flourishing trade fair and thriving local businesses.

The ceremony was led by DTI Region VI Regional Director Rachel Nufable, former Regional Director Ermelinda Pollentes, DTI Iloilo Provincial Director Dinda Tamayo, and representatives from partner agencies, local government units, and MSMEs.

This year’s fair features an expanded roster of 125 exhibitors, a significant increase from 85 in 2023. Visitors can explore a wide range of products, including bamboo crafts, cacao and coffee products, wearables made from traditional “Hablon” fabric, and various processed foods including Muslim-friendly food.

With a revenue target of PHP 3.8 million, the fair aims to build on the success of last year’s event, which saw sales reach PHP 3.6 million.

Throughout the week, visitors can enjoy a diverse program of events and demonstrations:

  • September 24: Bamboo product competitions and weaving demonstrations;
  • September 25-26: Seminars on coconut cultivation and Halal certification;
  • September 27: Hablon weaving pattern competition and craft demonstrations; and
  • September 28-29: Coffee and tablea brewing workshops.

The DTI Regional Office for Western Visayas, led by Regional Director Rachel Nufable, has pledged its full support for the trade fair.

“By showcasing the best of Ilonggo craftsmanship and innovation, we’re not just promoting local products; we’re fostering economic growth, preserving our rich cultural heritage,” Regional Director Nufable stated.

The Artesanias de Iloilo Trade Fair runs until September 29 and is open to the public during mall hours. By incorporating tradition with modern technology, the event exemplifies Iloilo’s dynamic approach to economic development. ♦
