Sydney, Australia —The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) showcased the artworks of Filipino visual artists in Sydney at the Art Exhibition entitled “Paradise Found: Philippine Contemporary Art & Design.” Held at Yarranabbe, Darling Point, from 24 to 26 October 2024, the exhibition positioned the Philippines as a hub for contemporary art and design.
“The ‘Paradise Found’ is very much aligned with the Malikhaing Pinoy Program, which is part of the implementation of the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act or PCIDA. Through this exhibition that demonstrates the exceptional Filipino contemporary art, the DTI recognizes the crucial role of the creative sector in building a Bagong Pilipinas, one where economic growth is sustainable and inclusive,” said DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque.
“By nurturing and supporting our micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially in the arts, we empower Filipino creatives to expand their horizons and share their unique talents with the world,” DTI Secretary Roque added.
In partnership with the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Sydney, the exhibit was curated by Salcedo Private View, the gallery division of Salcedo Auctions—the Philippines’ leading auction house. Presenting Philippine fine art within the global dialogue, the exhibition presented well-made works that addressed themes, such as sustainability, post-colonial identity, gender, and the environment.
The exhibit featured the works of Filipino artists, including Joel Geolamen, Rita Nazareno and Gabriel Lichauco, Poklong Anading, Aze Ong, and Ferdie Montemayor. These artists have earned acclaim for their contributions to the art world and have showcased their pieces in both local and international exhibitions.
During the exhibit’s opening reception, Philippine Ambassador to Australia Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega shared the creative economy’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors. She emphasized that most countries now prioritized their creative industries to create more high-quality employment for artists, artisans, creators, content providers, and creative workers.
The PCIDA mandates the development of a vibrant Philippine creative industry sector by protecting and strengthening the rights and capacities of the creative industry players. These include visual artists, creative firms, artisans, and indigenous cultural communities.
The opening reception of the exhibit was also attended by Philippine government officials, Australian art patrons, business leaders, media, and influencers. ♦
