The Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) served as one of the technical presenters at the Blue Economy Annual Trade & Conference (BEACON) held on September 30, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. The event brought together key leaders from government, industry, and academia, intending to foster innovation and collaboration in the maritime sector and promote a sustainable blue economy. The BEACON Expo concluded on October 3, 2024.
On behalf of PAB, Ms. Michelle Esteban, Chief of the Laboratory Accreditation Division, delivered a presentation titled “PAB Accreditation of Testing Laboratories Supporting the Maritime Industry.” In her presentation, Ms. Esteban emphasized the crucial role that PAB accreditation plays in ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of testing laboratories serving the maritime sector. Ms. Esteban also underscored that PAB’s accreditation services, based on the ISO/IEC 17025 standard, ensure that laboratories testing marine and maritime products, vessels, water and wastewater quality, and related equipment adhere to the highest standards of technical competence and reliability. These PAB-accredited laboratories are essential in ensuring the quality and safety of products, ship components, and environmental monitoring systems.
Ms. Esteban stressed that PAB’s accreditation services play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s competitiveness in the global maritime industry by ensuring the accuracy and reliability of testing laboratories, smoother operations in shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance, and areas where precision testing of materials components, and parts is critical. These services enable maritime enterprises to comply with global standards, facilitating international cooperation and expanding market access.
The maritime industry encompasses sectors such as shipping, shipbuilding, and repair, which rely on stringent testing protocols to ensure safety and environmental sustainability. Additionally, fisheries, tourism, and transport are closely connected to the maritime industry.
The BEACON Expo 2024 provided a vital forum for the exchange of ideas and the promotion of sustainable maritime practices, with discussions on green shipping, marine resource conservation, and technological innovations. The PAB’s active involvement highlights its dedication to advancing the blue economy and driving innovation by accrediting conformity assessment bodies.
