Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Lanao del Norte, in collaboration with the Board of Investments (BOI) Region 10 and the City Agriculture’s Office of Iligan City, successfully forged a partnership with Daesang Philippines on June 28, 2024 to explore new market opportunities for local cassava farmers in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte.
The initiative aims to uplift the lives of cassava farmers, particularly those in Barangay Bunawan, Iligan City, which have identified cassava as its One-Barangay-One-Product (OBOP). Farmers from other parts of Lanao del Norte are also set to benefit significantly from this venture.
During the recent orientation, Ms. Metchelle P. Ochavo, Purchasing Officer of Daesang Philippines, outlined the company’s specific requirements to over 30 farmers.
The orientation ended with a commitment made by the Iligan City Agriculture’s Office and local farmers to supply Daesang Philippines with 100 hectares worth of cassava produce. To further solidify the agreement, an initial 20 kilograms of white cassava were delivered to the company for testing.
Daesang Philippines has expressed a robust demand for cassava, requiring 300-500 tons of cassava daily to support its export-oriented production.
The market matching event was attended by cassava farmers from various parts of Lanao del Norte, many whom are DWSD beneficiaries. This indicates a promising opportunity for the partnership.
This initiative is part of DTI’s ongoing efforts to expand the market opportunities of local entrepreneurs. It is in line with the Department’s goal of Angat Negosyo to scale up entrepreneurs and enable them to improve their productivity and generate additional employment opportunities in order to become globally competitive.
