Nelly Coffee and Tablea, a local producer of coffee and cacao beans from Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, was awarded with the Presidential Awards for Outstanding Small Enterprise for Mindanao Island Group during the 2024 Presidential Awards for Outstanding Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Development Partners on July 10, 2024 at the Malacañan Palace.

The award aims to recognize MSMEs whose outstanding efforts enabled them to meet challenging standards of excellence and showed consistently their commitment for growth, competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability in the country. The awarding ceremony was hosted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and marked the revival of the Presidential Awards after a 15-year break.

Nelly Coffee and Tablea, widely known for manufacturing cacao tablea and herbal coffee without added preservatives, was awarded as the Outstanding MSME for the Mindanao Island Group.

The small enterprise started when Mama Nelly, mother of Mr. Kevin Pacatang (proprietor of Nelly Coffee and Tablea), produced coffee as an additional product to be sold in her sari-sari store. However, a fire devastated the market, including the sari-sari store. But because demand for Mama Nelly’s coffee remained, she continued her coffee production until it became their source of income.

Mr. Pacatang recognized trade fairs and technology as important contributors of his entrepreneurial journey. Through trade fairs, he was able to create valuable connections with customers and expand his market not just in Mindanao, but also in Visayas and Luzon.

On the other hand, technology propelled the success of the business through modernized production and techniques. This enhanced the efficiency and consistency of the product quality, allowing Nelly Coffee and Tablea to meet higher market demands. From being a home-based product, Nelly Coffee and Tablea has diversified its product line to cater to evolving customer needs.

It has currently developed a corn-based coffee infused with either mangosteen, malunggay, or barley. And through technology, the products can now be purchased online.

Nelly Coffee and Tablea aims to attain quality innovations and customer satisfaction as it continues to develop.

The 2024 Presidential Awards for Outstanding MSMEs and Development Partners was organized by the Department of Trade and Industry. ♦
