Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10 and DTI Bukidnon, held the Pinyapel Investment Briefing on November 14, 2024 at Loiza’s Pavilion, Malaybalay, Bukidnon.

The investment briefing focused on the possible establishment of an industrialized pinyapel pulp mill in Bukidnon.

Initiated by DCP, an attached agency of DTI, pinyapel was first produced as a specialty paper made from discarded pineapple leaves converted into packaging.

The innovative product has been awarded with a Wood Pencil at the 2019 Design & Art Direction Future Impact Awards in New York City for its positive environmental effect and overall sustainability.

Over the years, DCP developed pinyapel beyond its paper use to become a high value material for more product applications such as textile and packaging.

It is now aiming to create a new industry for producing non-wood pulp from discarded pineapple wastes.

By leveraging on the abundant supply of pineapple leaves in Bukidnon and in Region 10, the pinyapel can stimulate sustainable economic activity by creating more jobs and generating income.

The Pinyapel Investment Briefing featured a detailed presentation of pinyapel and messages of support from private stakeholders: Oro Handmade Innovations Inc., Nature’s Fresh Pineapples Inc., and Del Monte Philippines Inc. Employees Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative.

In her opening message, DTI-10 OIC-Assistant Regional Director Almer Masillones said the investment briefing is in line with the Department’s efforts to achieve its objectives of globally positioning the Philippines’s export sector; develop the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs); and facilitate investment opportunities by identifying priority investments.

“This is part of the Department’s strategic focus on investing in emerging products such as pinyapel to propel economic development that will, in turn, facilitate job creation, business attraction, and community improvement.” OIC-ARD Masillones said.

“We hope that the investment briefing . . . will be a fruitful start in enticing more investors and stakeholders to expand and scale up the production of pinyapel.”

The Pinyapel Investment Briefing was attended by Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Officers (LEDIPOs) in Bukidnon, industry partners, financiers, government officials and representatives, Board of Investments (BOI), and other public and private stakeholders. ♦
