The Region 10 Regional Halal Committee (RHC) is eyeing to expand the halal industry through increase in exports and increase in availability of products and firms in the domestic market.

This was revealed during the presentation of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10 OIC-Regional Director Ruel Paclipan on the Situationer of the Halal Industry in Northern Mindanao during the Oro Best Expo Goes Halal on October 29, 2024 at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

Oro Best Expo is a flagship event of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber). For its 17th year, its selected theme on going Halal is based on the significant growth of the Halal market in Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao.

Northern Mindanao is positioning to be a significant contributor to the Philippine Halal exports, particularly in Halal food processing.

The region is a major exporter of fresh bananas and pineapples and coconut-based oleochemicals, which is a major ingredient for cosmetics.

It also has the potential to export dried mangoes, other coconut-based products, and calamansi produce to Muslim countries.

OIC-RD Paclipan also shared the objectives of the Region 10 Regional Halal Committee and the interventions it has done so far.

These include the assistance to local businesses for Halal certifications, possible investments such as the establishment of Halal slaughterhouses, and ordinances by the local government units (LGUs) to further support the Halal industry.

“There are initiatives that we are currently doing by the Halal Committee as far as promoting the Halal industry in Northern Mindanao is concerned.” OIC-RD Paclipan said.

Promoting the Halal theme, the Oro Best Expo featured discussions on Halal market trends; programs in tours, tourism, and agriculture; certification; and Islamic financing.

Halal products and services of local entrepreneurs from Northern Mindanao were also showcased in the exhibit area. ♦
