VICTORIA, LAGUNA – The Department of Trade and Industry – Laguna Provincial Office (DTI-Laguna) kicked off its celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month (CWM) with various engaging activities on October 1, 2024, in Victoria, Laguna. Bearing the CWM 2024 theme “Be smart, assert your consumer rights!”, the DTI-Laguna personnel, on-the-job trainees, and government interns of the Department of Labor and Employment commenced the event with a vibrant parade.
Afterwards, DTI-Laguna Provincial Director Christian Ted O. Tungohan led the official launching of the month-long CWM celebration, emphasizing the significance of consumer rights in safeguarding consumer protection. A series of seminars was also conducted covering key topics such as Consumer Rights and Responsibilities, Fair Trade Laws, and how to file complaints through online platforms. To make learning more engaging, a quiz contest on consumer protection was also organized, providing participants with valuable information in a fun and interactive way.
According to the DTI Policy Advisory No. 22-01, Series of 2022, the Eight (8) Basic Consumer Rights are:
- Right to Basic Needs
- Right to Safety
- Right to Information
- Right to Choose
- Right to Representation
- Right to Redress
- Right to Consumer Education
- Right to a Healthy Environment
These rights should be upheld in all matters related to consumer protection, including settlements, decisions, and resolutions in mediation or adjudication of consumer complaints. By promoting awareness of these rights, consumers become empowered to make informed choices and actively participate in protecting their interests.
Based on the Presidential Proclamation No. 1098, Series of 1997, the month of October was designated as a time to promote consumer awareness and disseminate vital information regarding policies and programs that impact consumer welfare.
The CWM initiative encourages synergy among consumers, businesses, and the government, while aiming to expand the reach of government consumer initiatives. Moreover, it aims to cultivate a more proactive, responsible, and informed consumer base in the country (ALSLinga, DTI-Laguna). ♦
