Magellan Kaong Farm Products Manufacturing is a testament to the power of tradition and love. Owned by Rhodora Espineli, also known as Rhoda from Magallanes, Cavite, the business is recognized by the Slow Food Community Cavite for its Kaong Vinegar. It upholds traditional production methods, preserving the natural and distinctive taste of kaong. Beyond vinegar, the business is expanding its range to include kaong-derived products like kaong sugar and syrup, reaching more people with its unique offerings.

Rhoda began her business journey in 2019 by reselling health drinks but had to pause due to the pandemic. In 2020, she experienced the devastating loss of her son, which led to severe stress and health problems, including bleeding for more than two years. To help her cope with her grief, her sibling gifted her two drums of vinegar in 2022. This gift marked the start of her kaong vinegar business. Initially, she used unmarked gin bottles for packaging and sold her product from home. Motivated by the need to support her other son, who has a disability, Rhoda persisted through these humble beginnings. Just a few months after launching, the Local Government Unit of Magallanes invited her to join the OPCDO’s product development program for parents of individuals with disabilities. OPCDO then referred her to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

With the help of DTI, Rhoda attended seminars on product development, packaging, and marketing, and even joined the OTOP program, transforming the vinegar from a simple homemade product into a market-ready brand. This support provided the confidence to compete in the market and gradually gain recognition.

The transformation was profound. Magellan Kaong Products gained a foothold in the market, participating in events like the World Food Expo (WOFEX) and various trade fairs. The vinegar’s unique, natural flavor caught the attention of chefs and customers, becoming a sought-after ingredient in local restaurants.

Despite these successes, the business continues to face challenges, particularly in acquiring the necessary equipment and processing space. Yet, the progress made has already begun to improve lives—especially for Rhoda, who sees this business not just as a livelihood but as a way to honor and sustain a rich Filipino tradition.

This journey is about more than business. It’s about a mother’s love and dedication to her child, a commitment to preserving culture, and a deep belief in the potential of local products. She won’t forget the words of Ms. Marissa Argente, the DTI IV-A Regional Director: “Whatever business you’ve started, just keep going because the right time for you will come. Magtiwala sa Panginoon at sa kakayahan binigay Niya sa atin. Always stay positive in the face of business challenges. If others can succeed, you can too.”

Magellan Kaong Products stands as a symbol of resilience and love, proving that with faith, determination, and the right support, even the humblest beginnings can lead to something truly extraordinary. ♦
