lloilo City, Philippines— In celebration of Consumer Welfare Month, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 6 launched the “Adopt a Plant: Assert Your Consumer Rights” program in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture on 15 October 2024.
The event took place outside its Regional Office in Iloilo City, where 300 seedlings of fruit-bearing trees were distributed to the public.
The seedlings—consisting of jackfruit, mabolo, star apple, pomelo, and tamarind—were given to participants who pledged their commitment to nurture the plants as part of their contribution to environmental sustainability. Participants signed commitment forms and received guides on transplanting the seedlings, as well as leaflets that highlighted their eight basic consumer rights, a central theme of this year’s Consumer Welfare Month celebration.
“This activity highlights the connection between consumer rights and environmental protection,” said, DTI Region 6 Director Rachel Nufable . “We believe that by empowering consumers to exercise their rights—such as the right to a healthy environment—we can also inspire them to take action in protecting our planet.”
The focus of this week’s celebration is the “Right to a Healthy Environment,” aligning with this year’s Consumer Welfare Month theme: Be Smart, Assert Your Consumer Rights. Participants were encouraged to not only plant their seedlings but to actively care for them as part of their personal responsibility to the environment.
The seedlings provided by DA Region 6 serve as symbols of collaboration between government agencies to promote environmental protection and consumer awareness.
The activity aims to strengthen consumer awareness, particularly on the importance of maintaining a healthy environment as a consumer right. As the seedlings grow, they will stand as living reminders of the vital role each consumer plays in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
DTI Region 6 remains committed to promoting both consumer rights and environmental sustainability through activities like these, inspiring communities to act responsibly and make a positive impact.
