WESTERN VISAYAS – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region VI has thrown its full support behind an innovative program aimed at empowering local weavers and designers through sustainable and digitally-driven solutions.
During the Regenerative Philippines Innovation Workshop held on, June 18, 2024, organized by tech startup Panublix Innovations Inc. and US-based Fibershed organization at UP Visayas in Miag-ao, Iloilo, DTI VI Regional Director Rachel Nufable highlighted the importance of uplifting the region’s weaving industry while preserving its rich heritage.
“Our weaving traditions are integral to our cultural identity and livelihoods. However, we must adapt by embracing eco-friendly practices and market demands,” RD Nufable stated.
Panublix is a leading tech startup dedicated to connecting designers and brands to sustainable tropical textiles and artisan crafts.
Region VI was chosen as one of three priority areas to pilot Panublix’s digital platform connecting weavers to locally sourced materials, as well as regenerative fashion training.
Through this two-pronged pproach, Panublix aims to empower our weavers and designers, equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in a sustainable future.
The workshop has drawn participation from weaving artisan enterprises in Western Visayas.
The director lauded the involvement of Fibershed, noting it “highlights the significance and potential impact of this endeavor.” By adopting eco-friendly and socially responsible practices, the weaving sector can preserve cultural heritage while contributing to environmental sustainability.
Last year, DTI Region VI launched “WEAVE Philippines” – the Regional Inclusive Innovation Center linking stakeholders to drive innovation, address gaps, and scale up regional weaving clusters.
“We believe that this workshop will serve as a catalyst for transformative change, enhancing skills and knowledge while positioning Western Visayas as a leader in regenerative fashion,” the Regional Director affirmed.
With strong support from both public and private sectors, Region VI’s weaving artisans are poised to embrace a new era of innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness. ♦
