DTI Iloilo staff monitors prices of school supplies weeks prior to the school opening set on July 29, 2024

WESTERN VISAYAS – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has announced the release of the “Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies” for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, set to commence on July 29, 2024.

DTI VI Regional Director Rachel Nufable stated, “This annual guide is crucial for consumers as they prepare for the new academic year. It provides valuable information on various school supplies, helping parents and students make informed purchasing decisions.”

The guide, prepared by DTI’s Consumer Affairs and Advocacy Bureau (CAAB), covers essential items such as notebooks, pad papers, and other classroom necessities. Notably, this year’s list features 173 stock-keeping units (SKUs), a substantial increase from the previous year’s 117 SKUs.

Key findings from the nationwide data reveal that 68% of previously listed items maintained their prices, while 8% saw price reductions. However, 24% of items experienced price increases. Manufacturers attributed these hikes to rising paper costs, quality improvements in products like crayons, and overall increases in production expenses.

“Our office will conduct weekly price monitoring in key cities in Western Visayas, and monthly checks in other areas before classes begin to ensure fair pricing,” the Regional Director added.

DTI Region VI encourages residents to consult the guide when shopping for school supplies. The complete “Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies” is accessible through the DTI website and at local DTI offices throughout Western Visayas.

A press conference was scheduled on July 15 to offer media representatives and the public an in-depth look at the guide, featuring a breakdown of price trends, consumer tips, and a dedicated Q&A session with DTI VI officials. ♦
