Iloilo City – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region VI brought together 80 coconut farmers, processors and food micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) for a Regional Halal Orientation on August 29, 2024, at the District21 Hotel in Iloilo City. The event introduced attendees to the global Halal market—a sector projected to reach $4 trillion by 2028. This initiative aims to position Western Visayas’ coconut industry at the forefront of this rapidly expanding market.
The event, funded under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) program and Export and Development program, aims to provide comprehensive insights into Halal fundamentals, certification processes, and market opportunities for the coconut sector.
Ma. Dinda R. Tamayo, Provincial Director of DTI-Iloilo and Regional Industry Cluster Coordinator for Processed Fruits & Nuts – Halal Industry Development, expressed optimism about the impact of the orientation. “I see opportunities to streamline Halal awareness and appreciation not just on the health side, but we also look at the economic potential aligned with being certified producers and the huge Halal market that awaits,” Tamayo stated. “With this orientation, we open our doors to understanding the industry and take on the challenge, encouraging you to look closely beyond the rigors of certification.”
The day-long program featured a lineup of expert speakers who shared valuable insights. Ar-Chadee A. Bahjin, Sr. Trade Industry Development Specialist from DTI Region IX, discussed Halal basics, fundamentals, and the certification process. Julius T. Nanas, Regional Technical Staff from PCA Region VI, presented agribusiness opportunities in the coconut industry, while Norjanah C. Barosa, Project Technical Assistant II from DOST Region VI, spoke about food safety and basic food hygiene as requirements for Halal certification.
The orientation also included interactive Q&A sessions, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and clarify their doubts about Halal certification and market entry.
This initiative aligns with Iloilo City’s recent recognition as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, potentially enhancing the region’s appeal to both local and international tourists through the integration of Halal culture and food choices.
With the global Halal food industry projected to grow at an 11.25% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next four years, this orientation marks a crucial step in DTI Region VI’s strategy to help local businesses tap into this expanding market. It not only promotes the Halal Industry’s growth in Western Visayas but also paves the way for expanded opportunities for potential Halal MSMEs in the region.
The successful conduct of the Regional Halal Orientation signifies a major milestone in localizing Halal Industry Development strategies in Western Visayas. Several coconut MSMEs initially signified their interest to undergo Halal Certification. It sets the stage for coconut industry stakeholders to explore new growth avenues and contribute significantly to the region’s economic development through the rapidly expanding Halal market. ♦
